Message: I think your instanz is not start completely. First I would check your alert File which is locatet on the Database Server in the bdump destination...
I think you would find there an error why your instanz is not started. If this not your case than try to start your instanz again with the server manager .....

Hope this helps
Peter

Message: This errors means that the Database is unable to open or find her Passwordfile.
You can create a new in in the %ORACLE_HOME%/dbs directory with the orapwd utility or change the REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE Parameter in your init.ora File.

By the orapwd utlility open a dos box and type orapwd you will see the syntax you need.

Hope it helps

Message: Dear friend,

This type of error is shows because you database is not up.

1)First step is start service,if is already started than stop and start again.

2)Second if again you found same error than go to sqlplus and connect as interanl(in 8i) or sys as sysdba (in 9i).Execute quary and try to find out that which status of your database (mount or nomount). If you found it is in mount mode than media recovery needed for that database thats why it isnot up.

3)Third step if you don't know both of above than start sqlplus and connect to internal(in 8i) or sys as sysdba(in 9i) and execute command SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE,onece database shutdown you can start again from STARTUP command. That time you can see error for some datafile for media recovery.

4)Some times if you change location of your controlfile than database gives this type of error next time when it will start.

But I think above three are sufficent for your solution.

Best of Luck,

Message: Peter,
the solution of the problem was create a new password file! The location was indicate by a oradim.log file (c:\oracle\ora81\database\oradim.log).
Thanks a lot!

Message: Folks,
I repeat the same statement 3rd time on this forum: Oracle 8.1.7 does not certified to run under Windows XP!
There are to choices available: Ora817 + Win2000 or Ora9201 + WinXP.
Sincerely,
