Message: Reda,

I don't have a problem with you copying anything at all, but you should not take a credit for copied things!

I have seen this one as well:

(by Steve Adams?)

(there's more things like this on the site, some of them have a source link to www.dba-village.com, one has listed the author (me in this case))

Message: Hi Zoran,

It's a sad fact of life I'm afraid. Some people simply are not capable of producing quality work themselves and just push other people's off as their own.

I had it happen loads of times in past, most annoying of all is when managers and technical architechs pass my work off as their own great ideas as happened a few times in my previous job.

Nick.

Interesting links. Shame they spelt my name wrong like so many people do :)

You could try contacting the web master of the site with the copies and seeing if they'll remove them or credit the original authors.

Regards.

Message: Hi,

I'm not a layer, but I noticed that there are no copyrights on dba-village site to protect the content/authors (at least in theory) from casual copying material without a proper crediting of original author(s) (ok, some papers have copyrights on it's own). Perhaps it would be usefull to put in the footer of the various forms on this site a notice, such as Copyrighted under "Creative Common License" terms (http://www.labo-oracle.com/tips/administration/tips_42653_1.html ) or something similar in the spirit of the 'open-source' decade that we're living now.

I'm not naive in thinking that this would stop the jerks to steal others work, but I think it could give the author a better chance to demand removal of such content from sites like Labo-Oracle.com (which is legal entity in France btw.).

regards,
ales

Message: Ales,
This is a very good idea. (about the copyright)
Would you (so I don't steal your idea) send this to Geert?

In general, I am not so protective about the things I post here. For some they are a rocket science, but you should see the things I didn't post!
It's just a matter of principles.

I have tried to find a feedback link on the site - there's none. I have emailed the webmaster@www.labo-oracle.com and it bounced, tried to send to several variations of the above and it bounced.

Eventually, I signed in the place and put a comment in the post. I think most of the things the same guy posted are just plain stolen.

On the other side, I was really proud when I read the comment Linda Webb added to my other script, calling it 'interesting'. What would she say about my interesting scripts!

Message: Hi Zoran,

It's done.

>> It's just a matter of principles.

I agree 100%, it's not about being protective as much as it's about principles, even more so when you're giving your time/work/help/... for free. (Do you remember the time where Werner Puschitz didn't need the backup of his site whatsoever, because people copied his technical articles verbatim and published them on their own sites - thanks to the Google they didn't pass unnoticed for a long.)

>I have tried to find a feedback link on the site - there's none.

Well, if you click on the link at the bottom (Conditions d’utilisation et Copyright) and then select English, you'll find page dedicated to the terms of the use for a site:
http://www.supinfo.com/en/Newsc64b71f3-2a25-4528-8f14-1289fbc7d9d2.aspx

On this page you'll find the email address (info@supinfo.com) to which you can send your request.

Regards,
ales

Message: Hi

It's not just web sites that steal code, I can think of at least one book that is published on Oracle of which 90% (my estimate) is copied from web articles (usually metalink and Oracle docs) including installation on various platforms (right down to the instance names and hostnames, configuration and so on. There are so many referneces in it that each chapter has lots of references listed.

One of the reasons I don't post as mny tips and snipits of information as I use to is that I can't be bothered to help people who are only interested in easy answers with bothering to understand the principles.

On the web site forums section http://www.labo-oracle.com/forums there is a line in the footer that says the authors of the web site cannot be held liable for the content published by others!

BTW, it appears from this page http://www.labo-oracle.com/contacts/ that REDA works for the comapny behind the web site a s a trainer. Zoran, its a shame you don't live in France as you could sign up for a course and hit the theiving bast**d :)

Nick.
Regards.
