Message: hi guys,

pardon me for asking this question. i went googling but i do not understand what it means

from oracle ..

log file switch (checkpoint incomplete)

Waiting for a log switch because the session cannot wrap into the next log. Wrapping cannot be performed because the checkpoint for that log has not completed.

q1) I saw this when i am doing large DMLS (deletes)
but can someone explain to me what it means

by (wrap into the next log) ? by wrappinginto the next log - aint we doing a logswitch ?

Rgds,
Noob

Message: Hi Noob,

A log switch always forces a checkpoint. If the checkpoint takes some time other sessions will have to wait. This is your wait event.

'Wrap into the next log' is just another way of putting into words 'a log switch is going on'.

Message:
When LGWR has to switch to the next log file, it asks DBWR to flush dirty (modified) blocks to disk, this is a checkpoint.
As log file protects modified blocks against media failure, Oracle can't reuse a log file if all modified blocks have not been flushed onto disk by a previous checkpoint.
If this checkpoint is not finished when LGWR wants to reuse the log file (after reusing all the other ones) then it has to wait for the checkpoint to complete. This wait is named "log file switch (checkpoint incomplete)" which means I (LGWR) have to switch the log file but I can't reuse the one I want because its associated checkpoint is not complete.

Regards
Michel

If your large deletes are done line by line, and commit for each line, then you can improve by commiting everu 100 or 1000 rows. If not, and if you see thet 'log file sync' affects resposne time, then you can have bigger logfiles.
Regards,
Franck.

Message: If the online redo log file are smaller- then you have log switches frequently and in that situation associated checkpoint are not completed before the next checkpoint is initiated i.e incomplete checkpoint.Increasing the size of the redo log file so that logswitch occurs at interval of somewhere around 20 minutes has solved problem for me.
