Author: John Whalen, United Kingdom

Os info: Windows
Oracle info: Oracle 12c
Message: If I set variables ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID the following command connects ok:

sqlplus sys/password as sysdba

However, if I run the following command it seems to hang:

sqlplus sys/password@FOUN as sysdba

If I try connecting to database FOUN using SQL Developer selecting it from the dropdown list and entering user/password combination I get nothing.

The Listener is running and TNSNAMES.ora appears ok.

tnsping FOUN comes back ok too.

What am I doing wrong.

Message: Hello John,

setting ORACLE_SID: local connection, irrelevant for the connection using SQL*Net "@foun" (is "foun" the local database?)

Note that "tnsping OK" is not enough... This shows that there is a listener for this ( host, port ) but maybe the info about service_name (or sid) is incorrect.

You should try with another account than sys, for example try an invalid usr/pwd: sqlplus nobody/nopwd@foun
In case of "success" you should receive the error code 1017 invalid usr/pwd.

Maybe you can share with us the content of your tnsnames.ora entry FOUN?

Best regards,

Bruno Vroman.

Message: Are you connecting to a PDB, CDB, or non-CDB?

It makes a difference.

If it is a PDB then my first guess without much else to go on is that the PDB service has not been started in the CDB.

Message: Many thanks for your replies, my tnsnames for "FOUN" (this is the local database) is as follows:

# tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: D:\app\oracle\product\12.1.0\dbhome_1\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.

LISTENER_FOUN =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = FOIL-IFSBASE-T)(PORT = 1521))

FOUN =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = FOIL-IFSBASE-T)(PORT = 1521))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = FOUN)
)
)

Also, I tried using another account and also the using an account that doesn't exist and same thing happens it just hangs.

Thanking you in advance for your help with this matter.

Kind Regards

John

Message: Hi,

why don't you turn SQL*Net trace on and see what is happening behind the scenes....

Open sqlnet.ora and add:

DIAG_ADR_ENABLED = OFF
TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = 10
TRACE_FILE_CLIENT=12c_sqlnet.trc
TRACE_DIRECTORY_CLIENT=T:\TRACE

Then try to login.

Regards,
Ales
