Os info: any
Oracle info: 12.1
Message: Hello Guys,

are you aware of any additional note/link that would explain difference between oracle upgrade guide and metalink note? Or what is your experience? Our tests showed both ways working.

Upgrade guide stating not to use parallel option for non-cdb.
https://docs.oracle.com/database/121/UPGRD/upgrade.htm#CHDBHAHE

If you choose to run the catupgrd.sql script on a non-CDB, then doing so now requires an additional input parameter as follows:

SQL> @catupgrd.sql PARALLEL=NO

But the note is suggesting to use catctl.pl, not even mentioning no-parallel option

Message: I do not know specifically of a note but here is the differences as I see it. The catupgrd.sql script is upgrading the catalog of a database. So it needs to be executed against every catalog within a 12c database.

A non-CDB only has one catalog. CDBs can have multiple catalogs (each container has its own data dictionary so you have at least ROOT, SEED and one PDB).

The NOTE 1503653.1 seems to be focused on upgrading to a CDB instance. The catctl.pl script enables the catupgrd.sql to be executed against all the data dictionaries in a single command. That is the reason for the -n option. If you have 12 containers (PDBs/ROOT/SEED) then parallel 6 will allow it to execute catupgrd against 6 databases at a time.

The document is providing you instructions on how to execute it against a non-CDB. However, since catupgrd.sql is deprecated as of 12.1 it is encouraging you to utilize the catctl script. I know that you can not execute catupgrd.sql without the PARALLEL parameter but I do not know without more research the difference between PARALLEL=NO and PARALLEL=YES for it.

Regards
Tim
