Thank you in advance!

Message: Hi Ferdie,

there is really not a lot we can tell you here in regards of a time.

The time for the upgrade is not dependend on the size of the database. Actually, one of the things you can do to allow for an easier rollback is to put all user tablespaces into READ ONLY mode.

What will impact your upgrade time is, how many and which options you have installed in your database. That, together with the kind of CPUs, the RAM, the diskspeed, etc. will all blend together.

Barring any unforseen problems (such as some of the bugs that the pre upgrade tool will tell you about) you will see anything from 1 to 4 hours.

Unfortunately some of those bugs are able to multiply that time several times.

Regards,
Jan

Message: In building on what Jan said. I had two databases that resided on the same server. One was about a Terabyte in size and the other about 300 Megabytes. The 300 Megabyte one took more than double the amount of time to upgrade because of the options that were installed.

I also had a database that was very small about 50 Megabytes but it was on my laptop. That one took overnight to upgrade because of limited system resources.

If you think about what an upgrades does (changes the Data Dictionary) it kind of makes sense. The more objects you have in the Data Dictionary the longer it will take to perform an upgrade. The more options you have installed the more objects you have in the Data Dictionary.

Regards
Tim
