Message: Prasathi,

I know this is 4 days old but just in case you have not already found your answer, or completed the Patching here is my comments.

1) You really should read up on flashback restore and understand a product before you use it in a production environment. Test it in a test environment before depending on it as a recovery solution in a production environment.

2) Flashback will basically restore all the block changes that it has recorded from the GUARANTEED RESTORE POINT. That is all database changes.

3) If you are make changes to binaries, forms or other application associated files flashback DOES NOTHING with those.

4) If you have a dataguard environment then I might choose to turn off the archive apply before the upgrade begins. Then you can use it (if you have the capability to run on your dataguard environment) if there are issues with the database part of the application upgrade. If everything is confirmed to work correctly then you can bring it up to date by applying the archivelogs.

Message: Dear Tim,

Thank you for valuable tips for this activity.
We have no UAT environment for 2-node Rac with data guard setup.
So I could not test this activity in UAT so that I was gathering others DBA experiences.

I got the url for this activity, please check below url which seems that it is properly documented.

Please give me valuable feedback.

Message: You can always create your own environment using Oracle Virtual Box. It is a free software and there are free virtual machines as well. I have setup a primary and standby myself using a laptop computer to test out these types of scenarios.

The situation that the blog describes is mainly for testing. I would approach your situation differently.

1) Make sure to have a good backup created recently.
2) Stop archive apply on the standby database.

If there are problems with flashing back your database you still have the standby in pristine condition to switch to.

3) Create your flashback point (make note of the current archivelog)

4) Have the application upgrade occur.

Now you have choices.
If there are issues with the application upgrade you can flashback your primary database. If everything is after the flashback you can restart the archive apply on the standby and it will be fine.

If problems with the flashback occur you can use the standby database as the primary.

If all is good with the application you can start the archive apply and it should be fine.

I encourage you to use Oracle Virtual Box and create your own primary and standby database instances and practice this to make sure you know how it works and it works as you expect.

Regards
Tim
