Os info: Windows 2016 , 64 bit
Error info: Oracle12c Upgrade from Oracle11g 11.2.0.4
Message: Hi,

Oracle12c database upgrade from Oracle11g 11.2.0.4 on windows 2016 , 64 bit platform.

Source : Windows 2012 64 bit,Cold backup live DB datafiles and controlfiles

Target: Windows 2016 64 bit, Oracle12c Database software installed datafile and control file different destination[ not same as live DB]

I installed Oracle12c software on Target server.

Copied[Windows 2012,64] datafiles and control file s from live db cold backup 11.2.0.4 database files to target server[Windows 2016,64 bit] in different datafile destination folder.

How to upgrade to 12c, after copying 11.2.0.4 datafiles in target server.
Datafile & control files folder are different.

Whether i can recreate[reuse from backup control file trace of livedb] control file Oracle12c and open database and run the upgrade scripts.

B. Raja

Message: Hi BASHYAM RAJA,

1) First you will need a init.ora file.
2) Then you will need controlfiles
3) Then startup the database in upgrade mode
4) issue %ORACLE_HOME%/perl/bin/perl catctl.pl catupgrd.sql

The init.ora reveals the location of the controlfiles.
The controlfiles reaveal the location of the datafiles

HTH, Philip

Then you should rename them before performing an upgrade...

https://oracle-base.com/articles/misc/renaming-or-moving-oracle-files

I would storngly suggest that you follow upgrade instructions on Mike Dietrich blog...

https://mikedietrichde.com/papers-docs/

Message: Hi,

you don't need to recreate controlfile, you should open mount the 11g database with 12cR2 sw and rename the files.
If you receive ORA-01113, it means that you don't have a valid cold backup in place to start with the upgrade...solve it.

Ales

Message: Dear Ales,

It is on different server[Target server] and data & control file destination directories different from live server, so i have to create [resue the control file] control file in target server.
Correct? then only i open and execute the upgrade script.

Message: Hi,

well, if you recreate controlfiles you'll lose backup information stored in controlfile, it's not necessary, I prefer renaming the files with ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE statement. Please read the article that I give you above, by Tim Hall.

In summary:
- create pfile from spfile (on 11g)
- edit pfile and change the location of control files
- start 12c with edited pfile in *mount* mode and rename all the files (redo log files and datafiles with alter database rename file).
- now you should create spfile from pfile and freshly startup the database in upgrade mode.
You won't find exact steps to *properly* upgrade database from 11g to 12c on this site, no one will write this for you. It would take pages and pages to cover everything -- make no mistake, if you're dealing with production database you'll have to spend more than a few days to study the subject, especially if this is the first time you're upgrading...read at least Mike D. ppt if you're not prepared to read the official upgrade guide!

Ales
