Os info: Windows 2012 R2
Oracle info: 12.1.0.2
Message: Hi everyone,

First of all, I hope everyone is healthy and safe, and that you may have all returned to your jobs (even if you can work at home as I do ... :)).
Well, I have many databases in 12.1.0.2. All theses databases are mainly hosted on windows clusters (2 nodes, and 4 nodes clusters respectively). I was wondering something because I don't really know how databases in CDB/Pluggable mode would react in Windows Cluster architecture (I was about to attend an Oracle 12.2 admin course but can't actuallt .. I wish it is just postponed), so I wanted to know wether we can still have NON CDB databases on Oracle 12.2.0.2 ou 12.2.0.3 (respectively 18c and 19c). Do you have any experience about that ? Have you migrate your databases without changing them to container/pluggable databases ?
Thanks for your replies (in advance).
Take care
Joel

Message: Hi Joël,

yes, you can still run non-cdb on 19c (12.2.0.3). Since this is a long term release you'll have enough time to prepare for CDB. With >= 20c you'll have to change non-CDB database to CDB.

This is what I think too.
When we decided to migrate, we thought that 12.2 multitenant feature was mandatory but I just kinda saw that it was just deprecated and not unsupported. Well, I think this will help me alot :)
Thanks !
I hope you and your family are feeling good and that you have taken care of yourself ! #StayHealthy :)

Message: Hello Joël,

one remark: don't switch from 12.1.0.2 to 12.2.0.1 or 18... Next "long term" after 12.1.O.2 is 19c (and next one will be I think 23).
Interesting document to consult once in a while (it evolves over time) Release Schedule of Current Database Releases (Doc ID 742060.1)

About CDB/PDB: we are on 12.1.0.2 with CDB/PDB architecture but using only 1 PDB per CDB (for licensing reason). We managed to have enough downtime to "migrate" our 11g databases to PDBs by creating "new and empty" 12c databases CDB+PDB and using datapump expdp+impdp to switch from 11g to 12c... (one advantage: the 11g was still present as a nearly-immediate rollback if it had been necessary); and to minimize downtime for the largest databases we managed to split the expdp/impdp in pieces, moving "asynchronously" old historical (and static) data, and having only to move the recent data on D-Day.

Best regards,

Bruno Vroman.

Message: Hello Bruno,

I think we will migrate in 12.2.0.3 without the multitenant option, staying with our non CDB databases. I first have to run an oracle course to better understand and know 12.2 features. In example, we currently have a windows cluster architecture, and I am wondering how to move databases from one node to another node once they are in multitenant mode. I hope to be able to enter a course session in September/October but nothing is more sure than this ...
Thanks for your help anyway, I will look for the Doc ID you mentioned !

Regards,
Joel
